American Soybean Association and WISHH Host Aquaculture Innovation Conference in Almaty

Date: 17th October 2024

Location: Almaty, Kazakhstan

The American Soybean Association (ASA) and the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) recently hosted an industry-shaping conference in Almaty, Kazakhstan, focusing on advancements in animal feeding technology and the future of aquaculture. The event, attended by key industry stakeholders and local leaders, emphasized new opportunities for soy-based feed solutions in Kazakhstan’s developing aquaculture sector, specifically in trout farming.

Dr. Alan Poock, ASA’s Director for Asia, offered insights drawn from similar aquaculture initiatives across the region, detailing how soy extrusion technologies have enhanced productivity and sustainability in fish farming. According to Dr. Poock, these methods can be adapted to address Kazakhstan’s unique needs, offering local farmers a path toward higher yield and improved environmental efficiency.

Among the attendees was the CEO of FishTech, a prominent figure in Kazakhstan’s aquaculture industry. The CEO has been vocal in his commitment to advancing sustainable practices in fish farming, aiming to position Kazakhstan as a leader in eco-friendly aquaculture. By leveraging U.S. based feed technologies, FishTech’s CEO believes the country can develop a more sustainable and productive fish farming industry. This commitment extends beyond technology: FishTech is actively working to provide support and technical training to smaller farms, helping them implement these innovations effectively and profitably.

The FishTech CEO also highlighted the significance of partnerships in the company’s strategic vision. By collaborating with ASA and U.S. farms, FishTech aims to transfer expertise in trout farming to local Kazakhstani farmers. This effort includes pilot programs to test soy-based feed technology in trout farming, collecting essential data to guide future expansion and assess its potential for broader industry adoption.

For FishTech, the collaboration with ASA and WISHH is more than a technological advancement—it’s an opportunity to foster a self-sustaining aquaculture sector that could eventually reduce Kazakhstan’s reliance on fish imports and position the country as a regional aquaculture hub. The conference was a clear step forward, showcasing the shared dedication of global and local partners to bring high-quality practices and products to Kazakhstan’s aquaculture industry.

With support from ASA and WISHH, FishTech is poised to drive forward a new chapter in Kazakhstan’s fish farming, one marked by sustainable practices, enhanced productivity, and the potential for regional leadership in aquaculture.
